  • Introduce students to data curation practices and issues in research center environment
  • Share expectations and outcomes for student research experience at NCAR
  • Build community among students, science and data mentors

 

Day 1: Tuesday, June 3, 2014

  • 9:00 - 9:30 Introductions, overview, goals of workshop and field experiences at NCAR 
    (Mary Marlino - NCAR, Carole Palmer - UIUC, Matt Mayernik - NCAR )
  • 9:30 - 10:30 Working with Climate Model Data (and more) as a Data Scientist (Gary Strand - NCAR NESL)
  • 10:30 - 10:45 Break
  • 10:45 - 12:00 Student presentations on research interests

12:00 - 1:30 Lunch-Pairing of Master's students with data and science mentors; discussions over lunch

PM-

  • 1:30 - 2:15 Developing a data infrastructure for the polar science community - Advanced Cooperative Arctic Data and Information Service (ACADIS) project (Karen Andersen - NCAR EOL, Eric Nienhouse – NCAR CISL)
  • 2:15 – 3:00 Data Citation: Facilitating Attribution and Citation to Digital Resources through Unique Identifiers (Matt Mayernik – NCAR Library)
  • 3:00 – 3:15 Break
  • 3:15 – 4:00 NCAR Library experiences in developing an institutional repository: OpenSky (Jennifer Phillips, NCAR Library)
  • 4:00 – 4:15 Wrap-up
  • 6:00 – Dinner at UCAR Center Green Bistro – students, mentors, faculty, and staff to continue developing student projects
